The confusion in Chris, Barry, and Jill's eyes gradually faded, and they regained their spirits.
But they all frowned, looking somewhat confused, as if they had just had a long and chaotic dream, and only remembered some fragments after waking up.
They felt as if they had forgotten something important, but they couldn't quite remember what it was.
In response to Rebecca's question, Jill rubbed her temples to shake off the discomfort and replied:
"It's alright, Rebecca."
She glanced at Chris and Barry beside her; both of them looked exhausted and relieved.
"We're all fine, it's just..."
Gil paused, seemingly searching for the right words.
"What happened today... is just too crazy."
"It was like a nightmare."
Chapter 39 A Temporary Separation
Inside the helicopter, the noise from the propellers was deafening.
After recounting everything that had happened to her, Jill looked at Rebecca's young face, now covered in dirt, and asked anxiously:
"Rebecca! How are things on your end? What about Billy Cohen? What about the others?"
Chris and Barry also moved closer, waiting for an answer.
Rebecca Chambos, the young team doctor, looked shaken and saddened.
“Lieutenant Billy Cohen is not a bad person.”
Her voice trembled slightly as she struggled to organize her thoughts.
“Our squad… encountered… leeches on the way to escort him.”
"There are so many leeches infected with the T virus."
"They attacked the train, and then..."
Rebecca recounted her ordeal in fits and starts.
The train went out of control, monsters roamed freely, and team members fell one by one.
She and Billy Cohen worked together to survive, and only by splitting up did she manage to survive.
"Everyone else... is dead."
Rebecca's voice lowered, and her eyes reddened.
A brief silence fell over the cabin, broken only by the roar of the engines.
【boom! 】
Chris slammed his fist on the armrest of the seat next to him, the metal making a dull thud.
"Damn Umbrella!"
He gritted his teeth, veins bulging on his forehead.
"These heartless bastards! How many tragedies have they caused?!"
Barry's face was gloomy. He patted Chris on the shoulder but couldn't say anything to comfort him.
Jill closed her eyes, her chest heaving.
Wesker's betrayal, the mansion's devastation, Rebecca's ordeal... all point to that enormous shadow.
"Hey."
A calm voice broke the heavy atmosphere.
It's Zhou Ye.
He leaned against the bulkhead, his expression unchanged, simply watching the night sky rushing past the window.
"As long as humanity desires immortality and as long as there is endless greed, such tragedies will happen again."
Zhou Ye's voice wasn't loud, but it reached everyone's ears clearly.
"Even without Umbrella, some other Umbrella or some other pharmaceutical conglomerate would have stepped forward."
Chris turned his head sharply and glared at Zhou Ye.
"What did you say?!"
He could not accept this callous rhetoric.
"Are we just going to stand by and watch them commit evil?!"
Zhou Ye turned his head and met Chris's angry gaze, a hint of amusement even on his face.
"What else? STARS' hero, are you going to rush back to Umbrella headquarters now and wipe them all out?"
"That's really exciting, Chris Redfield, the macho man."
"Unfortunately, passion alone can't defeat capital and guns. We're unprepared, with no worst-case scenario plans, and we're going to go head-to-head with Umbrella? That's suicide!"
. "
[A game is a game, and reality is reality. Umbrella is now cooperating with Muzan Kibutsuji, and has even less scruples.]
Zhou Ye thought to himself, but continued to make sarcastic remarks.
Instead of making threats here, we should think about more practical issues.
He glanced around at the members of STARS.
"For example, after you go back, how do you plan to reconcile your statements and submit the incident investigation report to your superiors?"
"Do you really think that the only people questioning you in your reports were from the Raccoon City Police Department?"
“The Umbrella people are definitely keeping an eye on things too.”
These words were like a bucket of cold water, extinguishing some of Chris's anger.
Jill and Barry also calmed down instantly.
They all thought of that omnipresent company.
They saw the tyrant, and they saw the secrets beneath the mansion.
Will Umbrella let them off so easily?
Barry's face turned pale. He seemed to remember something and rubbed his arms.
"Yes...yes! Mr. Zhou Ye is right!"
He answered somewhat nervously.
"We need to stick to the same story! We absolutely cannot let Umbrella find any fault with us! At least not now, we're not ready."
Jill looked at Zhou Ye, then at Chris and Barry.
That strange feeling of forgetting something in the chaos resurfaced, but she forced herself not to think about it.
Right now, surviving and protecting yourself and your companions is the most important thing.
"Zhou Ye makes a good point."
Jill made the decision.
"We must coordinate our statements immediately!"
She turned to the driver's seat.
"Brad!"
“Here! Jill!” Brad’s voice came from the front, trembling with relief.
"Helicopter, slow down! We need some time!"
"no problem!"
Brad responded immediately.
The helicopter slowed down noticeably.
Jill took a deep breath and began to organize her thoughts: "Regarding the situation inside the mansion, we encountered a large number of zombies and Lickers, as well as mutated plants..."
Chris added:
"In the underground research facility, we discovered evidence of Umbrella's illegal experiments and encountered a biological weapon codenamed Tyrant."
Barry nodded repeatedly:
"Yes! We defeated the tyrant together! That guy was too troublesome! But we can't talk about the tyrant, at least not now. Knowing too much will drive Umbrella to desperate measures."
Rebecca added:
"And then there's Director Marcus, who came back from the dead, and the T-virus leech."
The four of them quickly exchanged ideas, trying to piece together the chaotic fragments of memory into a relatively reasonable version of the story that could explain their ordeal.
Try to downplay the parts that cannot be explained.
For example... they always felt that something was missing in the battle, but they couldn't quite put their finger on it.
Nami stood with her arms crossed, watching coldly with a smirk on her face.
"The acting was quite convincing. But to fool Umbrella? Naïve. They can act anytime they want, even without any evidence."
Saeko Busujima sat quietly in the corner, wiping her knife.
For her, these intrigues and power struggles were far less interesting than a thrilling and exhilarating battle.
Zhou Ye watched as Jill and the other three nervously "made up" their story, but he remained completely unmoved.
The memory-modifying spray works okay, but it blurs out the key information.
As long as they can make their story be believable, they should be able to get away with it for now. However, Umbrella will definitely be suspicious; they just haven't found direct evidence or a suitable opportunity to act yet. Trouble is unavoidable; they can only try to postpone it.
Once they had reached a general consensus, Zhou Ye spoke again.
"in addition,"
