Chapter 344 The Sudden Appearance of the Speedster
While Jameson of the Daily Bugle and Eddie Brock, a downtrodden worker, were locked in a tug-of-war over who would abandon whom, the outcome on Yang Yi's side had already been decided.
As long as the Quinjet continues to fly using aerodynamic principles, it is destined to be unable to operate normally in the hands of someone like Joey, who can command the wind and rain with a single move.
Turbulent airflow impacted all the fighter jets in flight, causing them to plummet downwards in a whirl, accompanied by the screams of their crews.
Joey flew over and, one by one, scrapped the planes that were nearly crashed into the sea and threw them back to shore. He also made sure to remove the weapon parts from the aircraft to prevent any crew members from firing indiscriminately.
Amid the chaos, Batman, realizing something was amiss, frowned, and in the blink of an eye, everyone vanished from their spot.
Perhaps feeling they were powerful enough to change the world, or perhaps some external factor had spurred them on, Hydra, lurking within S.H.I.E.L.D., had already begun its operations. The cleanup here was left to Iron Man and Superman.
"You have quite the good temper." Tony flew over from his mansion, which was now just a foundation, and looked at the Quinjet fighters that were being controlled by Yang Yi with an unfriendly gaze.
Iron Man had a terrible day today.
First, the past and present miserable state of the cyborg Tony he encountered in the parallel universe stimulated his nerves, making him feel fearful about what the future would hold.
Then came the unwarranted attacks on him in the online sphere, the burning of his mansion in the suburbs of New York, the assassination attempt on Nick Fury, and his own assassination attempt on his way to provide support by Hydra.
If Tony were to encounter these Hydra bastards again now, he certainly wouldn't want to give them the slightest bit of a friendly look.
"If you ask me, these former Spicy Crispy members should just be completely wiped out!"
Joey shook his head at Tony's violent remarks. "The situation is complicated."
If only things were that simple.
Approaching one of the fighter jets, Joey used both hands to forcefully tear off the metal hatch of the jet as if it were a piece of white paper.
A series of rattling sounds came from inside. Joey, whose face had been shredded by another burst of bullets, reached out and pulled two people out.
One of them was Brock Rumlow, a top enforcer in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s field operations team, nicknamed "Crossbones." He was the one who fired that burst of bullets.
After his rifle magazine emptied, Crossbones reached for the pistol at his waist with his right hand, intending to fight back. However, before he could even release the safety, an electric arc erupted from the shoulder armor of Iron Man's suit, knocking him unconscious to the ground.
The other person's identity is more complicated; he is known as "Son of the Beach!"
Upon seeing the newcomer's face, Tony immediately slung off his Iron Man suit, grabbed the man by the collar, and began hurling insults:
"Coulson, I've always treated you well, and it turns out you're also a Hydra?!"
Phil Coulson, a Level 9 agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., was completely bewildered as Iron Man grabbed him by the collar and lifted him up.
"Huh? What Hydra? You've been reading the reissued Captain America comics lately?"
After witnessing Superman tear through the Quinjet's armor, which was powerful enough to withstand the armor-piercing weapons standard equipment of 99% of the armies on Earth, Coulson was now filled with hatred.
Of course, his brain overload didn't just start just now:
"Wait a minute, Tony, all of this happened so suddenly and so fast. Let me tell you, there must be some misunderstanding!"
Before he set off, he received news that the chief had been assassinated and his fate was unknown; his orders were to capture the assassin, Nick.
Fury's mastermind.
How did I end up being dragged into a fight with Superman and Iron Man all of a sudden?
Nobody told Coulson before he left that he was going to take down Superman!
Coulson, whose mind was a bit muddled, suddenly remembered a joke Tony had told him months ago. His heart tightened, and he quickly pressed Tony for an answer:
"Tony, tell me first, you really didn't hire an assassin to kill Nick Fury in my name, did you?"
Iron Man was very unhappy with Coulson's act of throwing dirty water:
"Why are you acting like a vicious woman? Be honest and don't make false accusations. When did I ever say anything like that?"
"No, Mr. Stark, you did say that." Jarvis, inside the armor, quickly reminded him, and mercilessly played a recording: "Jarvis, hire an assassin for Mr. Coulson. The mission objective is to eliminate Nick Fury!"
With Jarvis's reminder, Tony suddenly remembered something and, like Coulson across from him, broke out in a cold sweat:
"Wasn't I joking? Damn it, Jarvis, don't tell me you actually did it!"
He was talking to Coulson about something abstract, saying he wanted to assassinate Nick Fury to make room for the latter. Did Jarvis really take it seriously?
If Black Lu Egg really died for this reason, what a huge joke that would be!
"Of course not, sir."
"That's good—." Jarvis's reply put Tony at ease.
Tony felt he should cut back on abstract stuff in the future. It was fine if people just thought he was being silly, but if someone actually took it seriously, that would be a real problem.
But then he thought again, there are plenty of people in the world who want to kill that black guy. Even if Tony wanted to hire a hitman, he would probably have to wait in line for years to make an appointment!
If Hydra dares to do this, then they must have made thorough preparations.
Tony's decision to turn back after fending off a wave of Hydra pursuers on his way to Washington was merely a stopgap measure; he realized that the obstacles he would face on his journey to Washington were unimaginable.
Nick Fury has gone missing, and without anyone to help him, his chances of survival are slim. It's truly worrying.
This old fox couldn't possibly have left himself no way out. Even if he were to be overwhelmed and killed by Hydra in one fell swoop, it would still be considered a contribution to the world!
After a mere 0.1 seconds of worry for that old fox Nick Fury, Tony immediately put him out of his mind and started shaking his collar, questioning Coulson again:
"Why did they open fire on us just now?!"
"I didn't give the order!"
"Who is that? Will you tell me? Will you tell me? Will you tell me?!"
Seeing that Tony was about to shake Coulson's brains to a pulp, Joey quickly stopped him:
"Stop joking, Coulson is fine."
"You're speaking too soon!" Tony, with a mischievous grin, grabbed Coulson by the collar and shook him for a long time, until the other man could barely stand, before reluctantly letting go.
"There are very few times when I'm in the right between us!"
Almost every time Coulson comes over, it's because Tony has gotten into some kind of trouble again. This time, it's finally Coulson's own fault, so he'll have to be severely punished to make up for the money Coulson usually spends on free meals and drinks at Stark Industries!
Since Superman said Coulson is fine, then Coulson must be fine, since both Superman and Coulson are people Tony trusts.
The current situation is somewhat complicated.
S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra have gotten involved, creating a fake S.H.I.E.L.D.
If Tony had indiscriminately shot down all of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Quinjet fighters, causing heavy casualties, it would have been tantamount to offending both sides of S.H.I.E.L.D.
If Coulson, the good-natured guy on the plane, were to die in the crossfire, Tony would be even more guilty.
"That damned Hydra, they really know how to set traps!"
Thinking of this, Tony felt a chill run down his spine. If Joey hadn't remained calm and refrained from killing him, the two of them would probably have become pawns in this scheme.
In reality, Yang Yi's mindset was anything but calm. He was far more agitated than Tony was. The reason he didn't use his heat vision to burn all the incoming Quinjet fighters to scrap metal was simply because his super hearing had picked up Coulson's voice inside the cockpit.
This is what he meant by "the situation is complicated".
Everyone knows that Hydra is hidden inside S.H.I.E.L.D., but S.H.I.E.L.D. is a huge organization with tens of thousands of people. Apart from a few people with names and identities, even Joey cannot know for sure who has problems and who doesn't.
Moreover, there are quite a few opportunists and centrists among them; it's a situation where everyone is part of each other, and that's the current state of Serpent's Shield.
After learning about the Multiverse Collision, he rushed back to Tony's universe to prepare for the impending collision crisis.
Who would have thought that Hydra would choose this moment to launch its attack?
As the group was talking, an unexpected situation occurred in the cockpit of the adjacent fighter jet. A member of the action team rushed out of the hatch, activated the bomb in his hand with superhuman speed, and lunged at Tony Stark: "Hai I Hydra!"
With Jarvis's help, Tony caught the scene and, before he could even scream, hurriedly grabbed the portable bomb. It was a weapon of mass destruction that S.H.I.E.L.D. had previously developed from the Cosmic Cube. Compared to conventional explosives, it was smaller in size but also more lethal.
Don't be fooled by its small size, even smaller than a hand grenade. If this tiny thing were to explode, it could easily flatten the entire beach and the remaining foundation of the mansion next to it!
If they're unlucky enough to trigger a chain reaction with the surrounding fighter jets, then it's not impossible for this coastal mountain range to turn into a trench!
"Lying down—."
Before Tony could finish screaming, the bomb finally detonated, but not from the outside; it was in Joey's hands.
The opponent was fast, but Joey was even faster.
Before he could even utter the first syllable of "Hail Hydra," Joey had already noticed this reckless speedster.
Although Joey's super reflexes aren't always activated, he noticed the other person from the very first second of the race.
The other party was as conspicuous as a four-wheel drive car that had stumbled into a group of tortoises in a race.
Joey snatched the bomb from the fleeing enemy, clasped it between his hands, and with a muffled thud, the bomb, powerful enough to destroy everyone present, was annihilated in his palm.
"Have you made enough of a scene?!"
