Chapter 53: Robert Heads North
Chapter 53: Robert Heads North
The secret police were unusually quiet today, and with the Gestapo gone from the streets, small vendors and ordinary people had more smiles on their faces.
"Everyone, it was all a misunderstanding before. I'm sure you adults are all so wealthy and powerful that you won't hold a grudge against me, right?"
[Calling a mouse a duck] He stood with his arms crossed, looking at the group of merchants he had summoned.
"No, no, I wouldn't dare."
It has always been the common people and businessmen who dare not fight against the officials.
These merchants were already overjoyed to have their money back, so how could they possibly hold a grudge?
If one is rich enough to rival a nation, one can spend a fortune to hire the Golden Company or the Faceless Men to seek revenge. Even if one is less wealthy, one can borrow money from the Iron Treasury using one's own assets, which will be enough.
But for these merchants, using all their money to take revenge seemed too wasteful.
It's been a while since then, and just thinking about it makes all my anger dissipate.
Revenge? That's something only someone with nothing thinks about.
If the boss is too weak, we'll just leave Pentos. If we can't afford to mess with him, can't we at least avoid him?
"His Majesty is benevolent. To compensate you, he has ordered a one-year tax reduction for all merchants."
The words "calling a mouse a duck" made everyone feel a little more at ease.
There was no gratitude involved; in their view, it was simply what they should do.
The merchants who had been clamoring to leave Pentos not long ago have now given up on the idea. The reason they haven't left yet is to see if the new owners of Pentos will compensate them.
Unless absolutely necessary, who would leave their home base to steal food from someone else's territory?
Merchants may tolerate insults out of stinginess, but if an outsider tries to steal their food, they will definitely make you pay the price.
"Find a few professionals to keep an eye on them, so they don't collude with outsiders for revenge in the future."
Once everyone had gone far away, [Pointing at a Mouse as a Duck] whispered instructions to the [Flying Bat] beside him.
"Understood, Director."
The mercenaries, composed of players, are still "suppressing bandits," but it's almost over. It's said that the outlaws on the plains have been wiped out by these ruthless individuals.
The Andals and Rhoynar, who were hiding in the Sky Goose Hills, could no longer endure the constant torment from these players, and many of their villages had already declared their allegiance to the Targaryen.
In a short time, many more hidden people appeared under the banner of Pentos City.
The Targaryens' territory also encompassed the plains, namely the southern plains of Andas, and part of the Goose Hills.
Of course, these regions are only temporarily under control.
Unfortunately, Viserys had no talent to govern the region, and not even a nobleman who could grant land to others.
For now, this is the only option. Anyway, it's much better than the tragic situation of the siblings in the original story.
Viserys has already given the players a system-issued order to return home.
If we continue to suppress bandits, we'll be pushing right under the noses of the city of Braavos.
The Silver Treasure Chest that mercenary players had been longing for ultimately went to the Heroes' Gathering.
There's no other reason than that the Heroes' Guild, under the leadership of [Storm Rider], has wiped out the most lawless criminals, racking up a mountain of heads.
Looking at Feng Yun as he opened a silver treasure chest and a unicorn cub, and the players cheering around him through the system panel, Viserys smiled faintly and turned off "Spy".
Westeros.
The king traveled at a leisurely pace, taking a month to finally reach Winterfell, the territory of Lord Eddard Stark, the Warden of the North.
Of course, in the words of the pampered queen, this was simply a non-stop hustle and bustle.
"No need to be in such a hurry when you see a dead person!"
These were the queen's exact words. Heaven help me, the king didn't slap her immediately upon hearing them.
This is completely contrary to the norm.
The Duke, accompanied by his family and vassals, welcomed the royal family.
Good heavens, how come the king is so fat, like a mountain of flesh?
The Duke of Stark stared in astonishment at the large, fat man who had rolled off his horse.
This was completely different from the friend he remembered.
Robert walked up to Ed, who was panting heavily due to his physical weakness caused by excessive indulgence.
Good heavens, I hope he doesn't suffocate.
Queen Cersei stepped down from the double-decker carriage, rolling her eyes as she watched her husband's retreating figure.
Two close friends, separated for many years, embraced and burst into laughter.
After meeting Eddard's wife, Lady Catelyn, and his children, Robert couldn't wait to take Eddard to see the "Girl" he had been longing for.
Inside the Stark family's crypt.
In the narrow passageway, Robert kept complaining:
"Ah, the seventh level of hell! What time is it? Why is it still so damn cold here!"
The king saw what he wanted to see.
The woman he never had, Lyanna Stark, who should have been his.
The king lamented that the woman he would never forget was not buried here, but the duke stubbornly insisted that it was a Stark tradition and that she should rest in peace among her family.
The king was deeply troubled by the stubborn words.
"I will kill him a thousand times over!" said the king.
"Even killing him every now and then in my dreams isn't enough!"
Robert's generosity wouldn't make him hold such a grudge against someone; he even appointed Ser Barristan, a former enemy, to the Kingsguard. But Eddard loved that about him, and he deeply loved Lyanna.
"Let's get down to business, Ed." The king turned his back, facing the source of his pain.
"You know he's gone. I need help. Come help me. I'm only good at smashing enemies to death with a hammer, but not good at looking at those disgusting smiling faces and pretending to be snakes."
Listening to Robert's words, Ed sighed deeply. He knew that what was coming was bound to happen.
The person before him was both his king and his friend. How could he not help when the king summoned the princes for a dialogue? How could he not help when his friend needed assistance?
Robert grasped this point, smiled, and patted the other man on the shoulder:
"If you take over, I can stop managing state affairs as before. I will not allow you to follow in his footsteps and precede me. This is the king's order."
"Jon..." Ed knew very well that the "Jon" Robert spoke of was someone who caused Robert great pain every time he had sex. He was just like Lyanna, someone very important in Robert's life.
If the Seven Gods granted him the chance to make a trade, this guy would not hesitate to exchange his queen and father-in-law for his beloved Lyanna and his respected foster father Jon.
"Alas, his condition deteriorated too quickly; so quickly that I hadn't even recovered from the shock of how healthy he had been before he passed away," Robert lamented.
Ed gestured to them to go back and talk.
On the way, Robert mentioned again that Lysa had fled King's Landing with Jon's heir.
Ed could see the weariness in his friend's eyes; he certainly didn't like any of this. If he could, I think he would fly to his younger self from years ago and threaten him with a hammer.
"Don't take that broken chair, or I'll beat you to death, you idiot!"
